Howard B. Nussman

Howard Nussman joined MSL in 2021 and serves as a Senior Consultant. He has worked with healthcare leaders for more than 35 years, guiding their organizations toward improved operations, quality of care, and patient safety. Recognized by clients as an effective educator, coach, and consultant, he has helped staff at all levels make meaningful connections between regulatory compliance and improved outcomes.

Howard’s background includes consulting and training in regulatory standards associated with CMS, The Joint Commission, and DNV-GL. His clients include organizations ranging in size from large multi-hospital systems and academic medical centers to smaller hospitals including critical access facilities. His expertise in regulatory compliance and accreditation include both acute inpatient and ambulatory settings, with emphasis on regulatory requirements for medical staff, performance improvement and quality management systems, and clinical procedural areas. Howard goes beyond assessing gaps in regulatory compliance and identifying areas of vulnerability. He is also effective in problem-solving, implementation of solutions designed to close compliance gaps, implementation of structures for accountability for sustained improvement, and achieving high reliability in processes that are critical to quality of care and patient safety.

Howard’s work experience includes roles as both external consultant to healthcare organizations and internal quality and regulatory leadership for a multi-state healthcare system. He developed and provided leadership to a large regulatory consulting practice, developing relationships with both The Joint Commission and DNV-GL. With an educational background that emphasized systems and methods improvement, he was instrumental in the design and implementation of a set of resources for implementing total quality management for member organizations in a large healthcare alliance in the southeast, in collaboration with The Juran Institute. As a corporate Executive Director for Quality and Regulatory Compliance in a large healthcare system, Howard was responsible for supporting a combination of both TJC and DNV accredited organizations with regulatory compliance, survey readiness, and follow-up to survey findings.

Howard earned his Master of Science in Health Systems degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. His Bachelor of Science degree is also from Georgia Institute of Technology.
